Spring 2019 Japanese Classes for Business

All courses provide participants with an opportunity to create Japanese-language oral communication skills through intensive speaking and listening practice in a culturally-appropriate manner.

After taking the 8-week course and with sufficient effort, participants will be able to understand and exhibit level-based Japanese business behaviors and will become more confident interacting with Japanese business-people in real-world situations.

If you’re not sure of your level, sign up first. Then, we send you a questionnaire to complete, and we’re happy to have you in more than one class in the first week (Note – that means you are responsible to do two sets of class preparation though, which will be around 4 hours work).

Business Japanese for Beginners BJB101  7:50pm – 9:20pm, Thursdays April 18 – June 6 (Note: April 25 class will be moved to April 24)

Participants will practice greetings and ritual expressions; introducing themselves; and talking about daily activities and schedules. The course is conducted in Japanese.

Expectations:
Students are expected to commit 8 weeks course.
No prior Japanese language skills required; this course is for beginners.
Be ready to study and participate at the class.
Class preparation each week will take approximately 2 hours, and include listening to audio files, reading and learning grammar structures and vocabulary.

Textbook provided and supplemented with teacher’s own materials, no additional fees.

Business Japanese for Beginners BJB102/103  6:15pm – 7:45pm, Thursdays April 18 – June 6

Participants will practice common office expressions; describing things using adjectives and talking about people, places, daily activities and schedules. The course is conducted in Japanese.

Expectations:
Commit 8 weeks of study.
As a prerequisite you should be able to speak greetings and ritual expressions, introducing yourselves, and talking about daily activities and schedules in a culturally-appropriate manner.
Class preparation each week will take approximately 2 hours, and include listening to audio files, reading and learning grammar structures and vocabulary.

Textbook provided and supplemented with teacher’s own materials, no additional fees.

 Business Japanese for Beginners BJB104/105   6:15pm – 7:45pm, Tuesdays April 16 – June 6

Participants will practice office ritual expressions, describe the locations of activity, asking and giving directions, making a plan, making requests, and using “plain form”. Conducted in Japanese.

Expectations:
Commit 8 weeks of study.
Class preparation each week will take approximately 2 hours, and include listening to audio files, reading and learning grammar structures and vocabulary.

Textbook provided and supplemented with teacher’s own materials, no additional fees.

 Intermediate Business Japanese IBJ305  7:50pm – 9:20pm, Tuesdays April 16 – June 6

The course emphasizes topic discussion and giving presentations.

After taking this 8-week course and with sufficient effort, participants will become more confident speaking Japanese and become proficient expressing your thoughts and ideas, as well as developing your listening complication skills. Conducted in Japanese.

Expectations:
Be proficient in daily conversation.
Recognize and pronounce hiragana, katakana, and a minimum 500 kanji and be able to use dictionary to look up unknown Kanji.
Have significant history and study of the language.
Class preparation each week will take approximately 2 hours (sometimes longer), and include reading a contemporary current affairs or business passage each week; talking for one minute on something topical and answering and asking questions; preparing and giving a term-end presentation in class.

No textbook used. Teacher supplies materials. Sample online news: https://blog.btrax.com/jp/us-work (students are given kanji/hiragana sheets to help)

Instructor: Chie Furukawa, MA in Foreign Languages, PSU; Japanese Language Teaching Certificate, PSU. Japanese Language teaching experience at PSU, Vanderbilt University & Wellesley College.

Refund policy: Course will run with minimum 4 students signing up. If course does not run, 100% of fees refunded. Cancellation after April 12, no refund if your cancellation causes numbers to drop below 4 in total. 50% refund otherwise. Refund processed after classes start. We will communicate with you as sign-up windows close regarding number of sign-ups.

We understand business people sometimes have work commitments that cause them to miss class. Many students end up missing 1 or 2 classes because of work commitments. We price these classes affordably in order to take this into consideration. We do not give refunds because “work became busy”.
